Taking Stock: Hector's ray of sunshine
So Hector's gone and there's no replacement planned by the Revenue.
So Hector's gone and there's no replacement planned by the Revenue.
His well earned retirement is not as intensely mourned by some as it is by Nick Montagu head of the Revenue.
One tax expert said: ‘I’ll miss him like I’d miss banging my head against a wall.’ No tears there, then.
The real scoop it turns out is that the Revenue never gave Hector his name. The department’s original suggestion was SAM – Self Assessment Man – but then thought better of it. However, a frustrated journo at The Sun, one Steve Ellis, insisted the character should be named and when the Revenue was unforthcoming went ahead and invented Hector the Tax Inspector. Neat.
It was all his fault.
