Go on, go on, get out

Less than a month before the self-assessment deadline the Inland Revenue has announced it will terminate its advertising campaign headed by Mrs Doyle.

The axe was wielded just seven months after the revenue hired Father Ted’s batty tealady to replace Hector the tax inspector.

According to a Revenue spokesman, Mrs Doyle’s tenure was only ever designed to last for the remainder of the year.

He said: ‘Mrs Doyle will remain in place until the next deadline. However, there will be a new campaign after that.’

The announcement came as an Adwatch poll in Marketing magazine voted Mrs Doyle’s adverts – urging viewers to ‘go on, go on, go on’ and fill in their tax forms – the most annoying on television.

Meanwhile the Revenue, which is attempting to reach out to taxpayers, is bracing itself for a last-minute rush, as about 3.8 million taxpayers have yet to submit their self-assessment forms by the 31January deadline.

Accountants have also said they are getting more late tax forms from their self-assessment clients this year.

Advertising agency M&C Saatchi has been hired to develop a new long-term campaign.
