Layoffs do little to hamper IT salary prospects

Layoffs do little to hamper IT salary prospects

Even though 35% of respondents laid off staff in the last 12 months, salary increases have consistently exceeded national averages.

Managerial job roles across the IT sector have seen salary increases of almost seven per cent in the last year, despite the downturn, as recruiting and retaining key staff remains a challenge to IT industry employers.

The latest salary and benefits survey from computing industry body CSSA found that even though 35% of respondents laid off staff in the last 12 months, salary increases have consistently exceeded national averages.

Average salaries for technical roles have also increased on average by 5.5% in the last 12 months, compared with increases of 6.44% in 2001.

Solutions architects now earn on average £52,192, with project leaders and IT consultants taking home on average £45,500. Even systems developers with less than three years’ experience can expect annual base salaries of £29,789.

The survey also found that a university degree adds on average £7,000 to the starting salary of an IT trainee, with graduate IT trainees earning £21,859.

CSSA marketing director Charles Ward said the survey results showed that it was business as usual for many companies. ‘Even though the job market is tight and there are more available people across the skills profile, it hasn’t affected salaries,’ he said.
