ICAEW and ICAS dig in over name change
ICAEW to continue with name change and move towards a public sector faculty, while ICAS stands firm against 'Institute of Chartered Accountants'

Battle lines between the ICAEW and ICAS have been drawn following the
dramatic merger vote, as both institutes hold firm on their strategies over the
name change argument.
Despite the ICAEW’s failure to gain a two-thirds majority among its members
over plans to merge with CIPFA, chief executive Eric Anstee said he still
intended to push on with plans to change the name of the ICAEW to the ‘Institute
of Chartered Accountants’.
‘While the institute is immensely proud of its heritage, “England and Wales”
no longer truly reflects the demographic of its 127,000 members or its future
strategy,’ an ICAEW spokesman added.
And ICAS said it would be forced to use its backing in the Scottish
parliament to object to the Privy Council if the ICAEW went ahead with its
current plan.
The ICAEW also revealed that it intends to talk with CIPFA ‘over the coming
weeks’ about forming a public sector faculty.
