Shadow chancellor Alan Johnson accuses government of making cuts along ideological lines
Shadow chancellor Alan Johnson has accused the government of being “deficit deceivers” and making the “deepest cuts to public spending in living memory” for ideological reasons.
In his response to the government’s comprehensive spending review announced earlier by chancellor George Osborne, Johnson claimed that the government was mistakenly claiming that the recession was the fault of the previous Labour government, rather than as a result of the financial crisis and global economic downturn.
“The [Conservatives and Liberal Democrats] opposite are deficit deceivers who have peddled a series of myths to the British public,” Johnson said. “Today’s plans are a reckless gamble with people’s livelihoods.”
