Solicitors join EY
EY has appointed five practicing solicitors to its tax controversy and risk management team.
Supporting the firm’s tax litigation practice, Richard Doran will act as Director, calling on his years of cross-border and public law tax disputes. Previously, Doran supported both high net worth individuals and corporate clients at both KPMG and a City firm.
Julian Balson has been also appointed as Director, and has been tasked to help build EY’s financial crime and non-VAT, indirect taxes controversy and litigation business.
Coming from a similar role at Grant Thornton UK, Paula Ruffell has joined as Senior Manager, bringing with her several years of experience across corporate tax, international tax and HMRC disputes.
Both Daniel Greene and Davinder Sahota joined the firm as solicitors, with Greene coming from an EY role and Sahota coming from KPMG. Both will focus on litigation in an effort to grow the firm’s tax controversy offerings.

Crowe expands tax resolutions team
Mid-tier accountancy firm Crowe has welcomed Grant Summers to its tax resolutions team as its newest Director, working out of the firm’s Manchester office.
In the firm’s Manchester office, Summers will work alongside Managing Partner Michael Jayson and the national tax resolutions team. This role will see Summers using his 35 years of experience in tax investigations, dispute resolution for both HMRC and private practice, and tax litigation.
Jayson said in a statement: “Grant’s background and experience is a great fit for Crowe, further strengthening our ability to support individuals and businesses across Manchester and the other Northern Powerhouse cities.”
Grant Thornton bolsters healthcare advisory service
Expanding its offerings, business and financial advisory firm Grant Thornton UK LLP has appointed two senior-level healthcare consultancy experts to its healthcare advisory team.
In his new role as Head of Healthcare Consulting, Malcolm Lowe-Lauri will use his 32 years of experience in health services leadership and management to reinforce the firm’s offerings alongside NHS organisations.
Lowe-Lauri’s work will also support the work of Healthcare Partner Matt Custance’s as the team further develops its healthcare transactions business.
Custance said in a statement: “The UK’s health system is under huge financial and operational pressures. So, consulting and advisory approaches need to change. Malcolm and I aim to build a new advisory offering that is more integrated, more respectful of the customer’s own expertise and more collaborative.

Finance director promoted to partner at Cowgills
Eighteen months after joining Cowgills, the accountancy and advisory firm has promoted its 33 year old corporate Finance Director Sam Davies to Partner.
Davies joined the firm in 2018, and quickly established himself within the business. In the past 12 months, Davies delivered over £100m of deals for the firm, including the sale of Assist Group to idverde UK and the growth capital investment by Foresight into Steamforged Games.
Ian Johnson, Partner and Head of Corporate Finance at Cowgills, said in a statement: “Sam has experience working as both an adviser and a private equity investor with BGF (Business Growth Fund). This breadth of experience has given him a depth of understanding of both the client and the investors’ side of a deal.

Audit team grows at Mitchell Charlesworth
Accountancy firm Mitchell Charlesworth has promoted Nick Spruce to Assistant Manager, while also welcoming Jonathan Lucas and Heather Heyl to the firm.
Spruce has more than seven years of experience with small and medium-sized businesses, and his promotion will allow him to take on bigger client delivery responsibilities out of the firm’s Liverpool office.
New hires Lucas and Heyl will both be based in Mitchell Charlesworth’s Manchester office, with each providing audit and accounts services to a diverse client portfolio.

Saffery Champness accountant celebrates 35 years at firm
Nick Fernyhough is celebrating a landmark anniversary at Saffery Champness Chartered Accounts, 35 years on from his training period at the firm in 1984.
Then known as Armitage and Norton, the firm merged with Saffery Champness in 1987, and Fernyhough took up a partnership in 1994. Now a Senior Partner at the firm, Fernyhough has seen the firm’s Bournemouth office grow from 15 staff to 60, working across audit, accounts and tax teams.
