Accountants miss out on SME business

Accountancy firms are missing opportunities to service small and medium-sized businesses because they do not understand what these businesses want.

That is one of the conclusions of a survey of 5,000 small and medium-sized enterprises carried out by the English ICA’s General Practitioners Board.

The GPB also discovered that SMEs prefer to use accountancy firms to measure their business performance even though they would rather use payroll accountants for controlling and growing it.

Among the other findings was that small companies value technical competence to a higher degree than they value their ability to offer a wide range of services.

The report is due to be launched at the GPB conference at Robinson College, Cambridge University, on 15 September.
