His application letter criticises Brown for not replacing David Clementi when he retired at the end of August and urging a public advertisement for the £200,000 post, offering: ‘At a pinch I could help you out.’
He said there were plenty of other well-qualified candidates and denounced reliance on the ‘old boy network’ for a replacement.
Clementi stepped down as deputy governor last week, leaving the Bank of England without any qualified accountants. He is to become non-executive chairman at life assurer Prudential.
