In May, we unpack the wave of activity in several mid-market firms, as well as the latest moves across regulators and trade bodies.
Mid-tier
(May 1) Alex Butterfield, has been appointed as a director of Haines Watts Nottingham Limited. Butterfield has been at the firm since 2018, having also worked at PWC for a few years before he joined Haines Watts.
(May 4) UHY Hacker Young has recently promoted Nikhil Oza, Rachel Chim, and Matthew Granger, who work at the firm’s London office, and David Allum, based in its Nottingham office, from directors to partners.
(May 4) Mazars has recruited Gabriel Fuenmayor to the role of transfer pricing partner. Fuenmayor joins the firm with more than 20 years of experience in the industry, spending periods at BDO and KPMG previously.
(May 4) Evelyn Partners has expanded its Bristol team by hiring two professionals in financial planning. The new additions include Adam Deacon, who brings his expertise as an associate director, and Ben Glynn, who will serve as an Associate Financial Planner.
(May 4) Kathryn Fleming has been announced as a non-executive director within the management board at FRP. She is currently the CFO at Control Risks Group and has been in the role since September 2019.
(May 9) Dow Schofield Watts has promoted Callum Sellar and Tom Dutton to director positions, while Ross Thomas has been appointed as associate director and Alex Odlin has been named manager. All four individuals had received their previous training from the big four accountancy firms before joining Dow Schofield Watts.
(May 10) Shaw Gibbs has revealed that Malik Salim has been promoted to associate director. Salim has been with the firm since 2005 and specialises in audit accounts for clients in industries such as healthcare and insurance.
(May 11) RSM UK has appointed Stuart Leach as a technology and cyber risk assurance partner, based in Milton Keynes. Leach brings over 25 years if experience to the role including three and a half years at Grant Thornton.
(May 15) Nick Hathaway has been hired by Evelyn Partners as its new financial planner. He joins the firm from Jerroms Financial Planning where he specialised in retirement planning and NHS pension work for five years.
( May 16) PKF Littlejohn has recruited Hannes Verwey from PWC to be a partner in its audit team in London. Originally from South Africa, Verwey spent 18 years at PWC and has been located in the UK since 2011.
(May 16) BHP has revealed two new additions to its partner group in Ellie Dignam and Matt Scott. Dignam assumes a new internal position as the chief officer for digital and efficiency, whereas Matt Scott has been appointed as a partner at Translink Corporate Finance UK, previously known as BHP Corporate Finance.
(May 22) Rajat Nayyar has been named as the tax director for Evelyn Partners’ Newcastle office. Nayyar brings a wealth of experience to the role, having spent four years at PWC as a tax manager and four years at UNW LLP in the same position.
(May 22) Gemma Legg has re-joined RSM UK as a partner within its corporate finance team. Legg first joined RSM in 2011 as an M&A graduate but went on to gain further experience at firms such as Grant Thornton and KPMG.
(May 22) Graham Parker has been announced as BHP’s first ever CFO. He brings an abundance of experience to the position, having spent 11 years at PWC in its audit department and just over four years at Auden as its CFO.
(May 24) BDO’s focus on sector-specific proficiency remains evident with the hiring of Graeme Hurst, a life sciences and pharma partner, who will be leading the transaction services team’s due diligence efforts.

Trade bodies and regulators tap accountancy talent
(May 9) For 2023-24, the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) has appointed Gary Ashford as President, Charlotte Barbour as deputy president, and Nichola Ross Martin as vice-president. This team of officers was approved by the CIOT’s council, and they will assume their new roles on May 30th during the annual general meeting.
(May 11) Rob Adams has been appointed as the Liverpool Society of Chartered Accountant’s president, taking over the position from Justin Lang. Adams is also an associate tax director at RSM UK and has previously worked at firms such as Grant Thornton. Before his new appointments, Adams had served as the deputy president.
