Training Courses

What do training courses offer and what does online learning entail?

Any type of training should be engaging, informative and beneficial to students. Online learning can take students on an incredible journey helping them to better understand theories, concepts and topics in a unique and interactive way. There are many courses that you can now study online, from degree courses to short online certifications. Even complex or dry topics can be delivered in such a way that boosts engagement and increases the chance of success. In today’s world, learning is much more than reading page after page of text. Learners are looking for an interactive learning experience with bite sized learning to improve knowledge retention and increase our chances of success. The whole sphere of training has changed considerably, with the internet in particular transforming the way in which we learn and retain information.

More and more subjects are being taught through an online course because they provide greater flexibility and convenience for learners. Online learning is now a viable option for many who wish to learn something new.  Many busy professionals are looking toward online learning as a way to develop their skills, acquire new qualifications or progress in their career. Studying online can provide much greater flexibility, making it easier for you to fit your studies around your personal and professional commitments.

There are two main types of online learning. The first is credit-based courses delivered by higher education institutions, allowing students to work towards an academic, degree qualification. The second type of online training consists of professional courses and certification. This type of learning is usually targeted towards professionals. In recent years online education has shown great promise. More institutions have increased the number of courses available for study and a number of dedicated, industry specific eLearning providers have started to offer professional courses in subjects such as digital marketing, accounting and even hospitality. Technology has played a key role in the expansion of online training, allowing education to be more accessible. Students can still access their “classroom” as with traditional learning but it is all based online.

Depending on the programme of study or the training provider, online training can be delivered in several different ways including:

  • Video
  • Blogs
  • Interactive slides
  • Games
  • Printed material
  • Online tutorials
  • Virtual worlds

The majority of online courses are offered through a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where students can access their own learner management system, connect with fellow students, communicate with their tutor, access learning materials and submit assignments.

It could include live sessions or a training portal that you can log into at any time and pick up your training where you left it. In the majority of instances, you will be given weekly or monthly assignments which may or may not contribute to your final qualification.

Studying online for any qualification requires a serious commitment and it is not something that should be considered lightly. As a minimum, to study an online course you will be expected to demonstrate:

  • An ongoing commitment to your studies for the duration of your course
  • A willingness to invest your time in studying materials, making notes and writing assessments
  • Strong time management skills and motivation
  • The ability to engage with and participate in online discussions both with fellow students and tutors
  • Ongoing engagement with your course for the entire duration of your course

The online classroom

When you study online you will have access to a range of learning materials and you will be required to:

  • Read learning materials such as textbooks, handbooks, online resources and other written material
  • Complete written assessments and participate in online discussions

As an online student you will:

  • Earn an industry recognised qualification
  • Study for an online qualification anywhere you have an internet connection
  • Be able to access your learning materials online at a time that is convenient for you
  • Be able to learn from experienced industry professionals

Benefits of online qualifications

There are many drawbacks to traditional, classroom-based learning. Firstly, many students have to pay a lot of money to attend a course with a training provider or college. Millions of students around the world are opting for online courses and it presents some excellent opportunities for those hoping to learn.

  1. Location is no barrier

There was once a time where to study your chosen course you would have to travel quite a distance to a college or training provider. With online learning you have so much choice and location is no longer an issue. You can even study with an international training provider.

  1. Better environment

With online learning you won’t have to sit in a class for hours at an uncomfortable desk, following a strict daily schedule, you can study at home early in the morning or in the garden into the evening. You are completely free to choose your own schedule and study at a time and place that is comfortable for you.

  1. Your CV

Regardless of what stage you are at in your career, an online course will always impress on your CV. It will demonstrate to potential employers that you are committed to continuous professional development and you are eager to learn new skills.

  1. Self Paced

Many online courses are self paced so you can study at a pace that suits your style of learning. When you enrol onto a traditional program of study the course will follow quite a strict schedule requiring a certain commitment every day. With online learning you can study at your own pace, without the fear of being left behind if you want to spend more time on certain topics.

Online courses are certainly convenient and more often than not, cheaper than classroom based learning. Students have a huge choice not only of subject areas but also providers who offer training courses. Online qualifications offer excellent flexibility and with the various technologies you can use to access your learning materials such as video, interactive slides, games and more, you can really make the most out of your online learning experience.
