Beckett makes manufacturing pledge
In a recent statement, President of the Board of Trade Margaret Beckett stressed that manufacturing is the key to Britain’s economic success.
She said: “We need to revitalise our manufacturing base by encouraging high-tech industries, boosting exports and ‘benchmarking’ British companies against overseas competitors.”
“The Government is fully committed to taking the needs of manufacturing and service industries equally seriously. Of course, the most important role that Government plays is to provide a stable economic framework.
Long-term stability leads to long-term benefits to all industry.”
The document “Benchmarking British Business” will identify areas in need of improvement. A Competitiveness Advisory Group has already met and working parties are being set up to discuss issues.
