Taking Stock - Cheeky Wayne's winning way with figures.
For numerical agility, accountants and darts players probably come top of the league. So it seems logical to combine the two pursuits. Step up to the oche Wayne Mardle, senior admin assistant at the Association of Accounting Technicians, who has turned it into an art form. Not only is the AAT man keen on his darts but his elbow action is world class. Recent performances include appearances at the Embassy world Championship and the Dutch Open. This is no flight of fancy. By day, Wayne is a mild-mannered assistant to the humdrum world of accountancy, but by night enters the glamourous, neon-lit world of elite darts. In fact, to hammer home the point, so committed is the master to his craft, that when Accountancy Age called to interview him he had taken the day off work to play in Blackpool. At the peak of his powers Mardle entered the recent world championship but was beaten in an early round. Never a man to let something get him down he flew to Holland, where darts is second only to football, and won the Dutch open. He even managed that elusive feat – a nine-dart checkout. So jubilant was the crowd he was mobbed and demands were made for his autograph, one on a young lady’s navel and another on a male fan’s chest. ‘Had this been the other way round, the weekend would have been complete,’ enthused a euphoric Mardle. Pity accounts are never presented in the same way, isn’t that right Wayne?
