Accountant to head war on terror funds
An accountant from the private sector will be appointed to head up a new anti money laundering and terrorist finance unit, chancellor Gordon Brown revealed today.
Brown was answering questions in the House of Commons when he made public his latest plans to fight terrorist funding.
The new unit is expected to either work closely with, or be part of, the National Criminal Intelligence Service.
Observers have expressed surprise that the chancellor should speak so publicly about appointing from the private sector.
He added that London would also become an international clearing centre for collecting information and intelligence on money laundering and terrorist funds.
The Treasury was however unable to say who would get what will surely become one of the most high profile jobs in UK crime fighting.
