Hewitt faces grilling from MPs
Trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt is to be quizzed today by MPs about restructuring plans for her department.
Appearing before the trade and industry select committee, Hewitt will face questions on the DTI’s support for business as well as the controversial idea of bringing leading business people into the department.
Accountancy Age exclusively reported last week how concerns were mounting that the voice of small business would not be heard at the DTI.
Under the proposed new structure, the Small Business Service will no longer report to Hewitt.
The issue has been compounded by SBS chief David Irwin’s decision to step down next March after only a year in the role – speculation persists he will be replaced by a minor civil servant.
