Trade and Industry secretary Patricia Hewitt has signalled the need for a government review into securing improved performance by indenturing non-executive directors.
She told the Commons the government believed effective non-executive directors had a key role to play in contributing to the success of their companies.
And she added, in reply to a question from Edinburgh North and Leith Labour MP Mark Lazarowich: ‘This is an area where the government believes there is room for improvement.’
Hewitt said her department ‘regularly discusses this issue with institutional investors and other leading business organisations, and recognises and appreciates the work they do in raising the effectiveness of non-executive directors.’
She said the Myners review highlighted the importance of non-executive officials.
