Ernst & Young has been paid nearly £8m for running the nation's railways, six months after the plug was pulled on Railtrack plc.
A further £7.3m has been paid to other consultants since transport secretary Stephen Byers forced the company into administration last October.
The figures were revealed in a report from E&Y to Byers, rail regulator Tom Winsor and the Strategic Rail Authority.
Meanwhile, it has been reported in the Independent on Sunday that David James, the company doctor parachuted in to the Millennium Dome, could take on a role at Network Rail, the not-for-profit organisation vying to take over Railtrack.
James is currently working as an adviser on the Swift Rail bid for the railways.
