Accountants seeking temp work flood market

The South-East of England, including London, has seen a significant increase in the number of permanent jobs on offer, at a time when greater numbers of accountants are seeking new temporary work.
From March 2002 to April 2002, permanent job vacancies in the region climbed by 13%, up 24% on average figures for last six months, according to recruitment company Alexander Lloyd.
At the same time, the number of candidates registered for permanent work fell by 18% on the month, with the majority seeking employment in temporary placements
Given that new jobs in the temporary accounting sector fell by 12% on the month, this suggests a shortage of temporary posts might be imminent.
According to Lloyd, this suggests a ‘flow of temporary workers back on to the market having fulfilled their previous work agreements’.
But Neil Quarendon, operations director at the company, warned that monthly statistics should be read carefully.’It takes time for permanent appointments to be made and changes on temporary contracts to be completed often spread over more than one month,’ he said.
