The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee is to launch an probe into the cost of the Royal Train.
MPs on Westminster’s main financial watchdog believe it could be too expensive despite its key role in the Queen’s golden jubilee tour of Britain.
Labour member of the all-party body, Geraint Davis, said changing the way it is used or scrapping it altogether – as with the royal yacht Britannia – were both options.

In May, members of the Public Accounts Committee said they wanted the royal accounts, including those of the Queen, to be publicly inspected as part of a bid to increase openness and transparency.
Last month, the first ever published annual accounts for the Queen’s civil list showed a £1.6m increase in expenditure, a rise of 25.3% for the year ending 31 December 2001.
