Brown ally to take top job at Treasury
Head of public finances to become new permanent secretary
The government is expected to confirm the appointment of Nick Macpherson as
new permanent secretary at the Treasury this week.
Macpherson, a former accountant at Peat Marwick, will take the number two job
in the civil service after his predecessor at the Treasury, Sir Gus O’Donnell,
became the country’s top mandarin this month as head of the Home Civil Service.
Currently director of the budget and public finances department, Macpherson
joined the Treasury in 1985 and has worked closely with Chancellor Gordon Brown
for the past eight years.
His appointment is seen as a boost for Brown with two of his closest allies
now in the two most senior roles in Whitehall.
