The ICAEW should not have created the role of chief executive, according to
responses from critics.
Some of ICAEW chief executive Eric Anstee’s biggest detractors have spoken
out following the announcement that he is stepping down from the role.
Bruce Lawson, who set up Members Against Consolidation last year to fight
against the institute’s failed drive to merge with CIPFA, said the institute was
wrong appointing a chief executive in the first place, having previously
operated with a secretary-general.
‘We don’t need someone dynamic trying to take over the world, we’re all
paying for grandiose schemes,’ said Lawson.
He said that a more ‘practice-focused’ head was required as Anstee’s
replacement, and the retiring chief executive had ‘lost the plot’ and angered ‘a
lot of members’ with regards the merger vote.
Ken Frost, who featured alongside Anstee in Accountancy Age’s Top 50
Financial Power List for his
blog –
initially set up to criticise last year’s merger attempt – warned that the
timing of Anstee’s departure could be construed as distracting attention away
from the expected review of the situation that led to the stepping down of
Graham Durgan as president elect of the ICAEW weeks earlier.
