People should not pay IHT on homes, institute says
Following former transport secretary Stephen Byers attack on inheritance tax,
the ACCA has waded into the debate called on the government to abolish IHT on
people’s primary homes.
The ACCA said IHT was still a key issue for most people, despite the increase
in the threshold to £285,000 in April 2006.
ACCA head of taxation Chas Roy-Chowdhury said: ‘ACCA has called on the
government to overhaul the system with a view to making the main residence
exempt from inheritance tax, therefore removing one of the great inequities of
the tax system and so reducing the burden on ordinary taxpayers and their
families.’
