Institute calls for an end to squabbling

The ICAEW delivers a plea for unity between accounting bodies
ICAEW president Ian Morris issued a call for unity between accounting bodies
in a conciliatory speech to Scottish professionals at an event in Edinburgh last
night.
Referring to the rows the ICAEW and ICAS have had over the last year, he
said: ‘In all successful partnerships there are occasional difference between
partners. The important thing is that having aired our differences, we then have
a drink together and all goes smoothly.’
At the height of the ICAEW-CIPFA merger discussions, rows flared up over the
plan to rename the institute the ICA. ICAEW chief executive Eric Anstee
threatened at the time to ‘realign’ the funding of the Consultative Committee of
Accountancy Bodies over the move.
Despite the conciliatory remarks, Morris did not comment on the institute’s
aggressive recruitment of other institutes’ professionals, or its commitment to
a separate CPD strategy, another bone of contention.
Morris said that the ICAEW would be more competitive for students and members
in Scotland, with the introduction of its first training office in the country,
through Johnston Carmichael.
