HM Revenue and Customs said 5.8 million people met the self-assessment
deadline for filling out their tax return at the weekend.
Two-thirds of returns have now been filed for the 2007-08 year. More than 9.5
million tax payers are now in the online self-assessment system.
The taxman has confirmed that those who filed on Sunday, a day after the
Saturday deadline, will not be charged the £100 fine. Earlier reports had
suggested that anyone who failed to file by Saturday midnight would be fined.
