Tory leader David Cameron will compel a frontbench MP accused of avoiding
paying capital gains tax on the sale of her second home to repay the money,
according to comments he made on BBC One’s Politics Show.
Cameron said the practice of claiming one’s second home as principal place of
residence was unacceptable. He has set up a panel to examine MPs expense claims
is prepared to punish those who did not pay capital gains tax.
Another Tory MP, Sir John Butterfill, has agreed to repay £20,000 in tax and
mortgage payments he claimed against the staff quarters at his home. But he has
denied avoiding capital gains tax on the £1.2 million sale of a six-bedroom
house.
