Only 1 in 20 to benefit from Tory marriage tax break
Treasury figures suggest tax break would cost taxpayers £600,000
David Cameron’s proposed tax benefit for married couples would “only help one
in twenty couples,” the Daily
Mirror has reported.
The Conservative party leader now says that only married couples with
children under the age of three will benefit from his tax break.
Treasury figures show that this would benefit only 6% of married couples,
needing £600,000 to be raised through green taxes.
Chief Treasury secretary Liam Byrne said: “Cameron’s marriage plan does
nothing for 19 of 20 couples but put a tax rise on their cars and holidays.
“He broke his promise to help all marrieds when he was forced to admit his
plans didn’t add up. Now he’s in the absurd position of having a married couples
policy that leaves the majority of them worse off.”
