    Tax evasion on cigarette duty lands former football CEO in jail

    Former Halesowen Town chief Guy Simpson pleaded guilty to £4.5m tax evasion on cigarette duty when he tried to smuggle fake Regal cigarettes through Southampton Port

    A former football club chief executive has been jailed for tax evasion on
    cigarette duty.

    Guy Simpson, a former CEO for West Midlands team Halesowen Town, admitted to
    tax evasion for the sum of £4.5m.

    Simpson was charged after he tried to smuggle fake Regal cigarettes through
    Southampton port in 2008, the
    BBC
    reported.

    The former CEO’s import documents claimed the containers at Southampton Port
    were filled with exercise gym balls.

    Simpson, was jailed for five and a half years.

    The cigarettes were shredded and burnt at a power station to help power the
    national grid.
