Leading charities including Oxfam have called for a new tax to fund aid
projects overseas.
Judith Robertson, head of Oxfam Scotland, said around £3bn of aid would save
the lives of two million mothers and children overseas,
The Herald reports.
“We have talked about doing the right thing for the last ten years – now is
the time for world leaders to stop talking and start delivering on past
promises,” she said.
Her statement was made ahead of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
conference which is due to meet in New York today.
The MDGs were agreed on by global leaders which set targets such as halving
extreme poverty and the spread of HIV/AIDs by 2015.
