Former KPMG partner to step down from his post as principal private secretary to Prince of Wales
SIR MICHAEL PEAT, the former partner at KPMG whose great grandfather was one of the firm’s founders, is to step down from his role as Prince Charles’ principal private secretary.
Sir Michael, 61, began work for the royal family in 1990 first as director of finance to the Royal Household following a spell as auditor of the Privy Purse. In 1996 he became Keeper of the Privy Purse and Treasurer to the Queen. In 2002 he became Private Secretary to Prince Charles.
Sir Michael is credited with modernising royal finances following a study he conducted in 1986. He is reported in the Financial Times as the man behind the Queen beginning to pay tax and the reforming of the Civil List so the Queen takes her income from a share of the revenues from the Crown Estate.
His move to aiding the Queen and Prince Charles came after a 20-year career with KPMG where he was made partner in 1985.
Sir Michael is reportedly seeking a return to the private sector.
