Bio
Winfried Bischoff graduated from University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1961, after which he began his career at Chase Manhattan Bank.
In 1984 he joined Schroders in London, working his way up to CEO in 1984 and chairman in 1995. He then became chairman of Citigroup Europe, a position he held until 2007.
In 2009 he was appointed as chairman of Lloyds Banking Group, and remained in this role until his retirement in April 2014.
In 2014 he became chairman of the Financial Reporting Council.
Inclusion in Financial Power List 2018
Bischoff takes the seventh spot in 2018’s power list. After an extensive career in banking Bischoff became chairman of the FRC, bringing with him a wealth of board experience. Bischoff is a strong advocate for good corporate governance and building corporate culture.
As chairman of the watchdog, Bischoff oversees the regulation of auditors, accountants and actuaries.
He is also a member of the 30% Club, a group of FTSE-100 Chairmen committed to having at least 30% of their board members being female.
Bischoff was awarded a knighthood in 2000 for services to the banking industry and in 2016 was given a Non-Executive Director Lifetime Achievement Award.
