More than a third would support rubbish tax
Government proposals for a ‘pay-as-you-throw’ tax on household waste has more
widespread support than people might have previously thought, according to a new
survey by Grant Thornton.
In its survey, over a third of respondents indicating support for the idea.
A higher proportion – 40% – believe the measure would successfully improve
environmental behaviour, such as boosting recycling rates.

Lagerberg, tax partner at Grant Thornton, said: ‘The survey showed that on
in every three would be happy to pay as they throw with a further 19% likely to
be swayed. It also shows that there is an appetite for tax to play a part in
tackling the UK’s responsibilities toward climate change.
However she said a tax on waste would not be palatable.
