But as the world’s largest accounting body retreats from remote invigilation, does professional security come at the expense of student accessibility?

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) the global heavyweight of our profession has just dropped a bombshell. From March 2026, the era of remote-invigilation for flagship exams is coming to a grinding halt. Candidates will be traded back from their spare bedrooms to the cavernous, slightly chilly halls of places like London’s ExCeL Centre.
For the 257,000 members and the half-million students currently climbing the mountain, this isn’t just a change in venue; it’s the first major casualty in the war between professional integrity and Generative AI.
Let’s be honest: remote invigilation was a brilliant sticking plaster for the pandemic. It kept the pipeline of talent flowing when the world was in lockdown. But as ACCA Chief Executive Helen Brand told the Financial Times, we’ve reached a “tipping point.”
The technology used to catch cheats is now being comprehensively outpaced by the technology used to help them. We aren’t just talking about a cheeky glance at a textbook or formulas written on a forearm anymore. We are talking about students photographing screens and feeding complex tax scenarios into AI chatbots for instant, high-level analysis.
“The sophistication of cheating systems is outpacing what can be put in terms of safeguards,” Brand admitted. It turns out that while we were all excited about AI automating our bank reconciliations, a few enterprising candidates were busy using it to automate their entire career entry.
This isn’t happening in a vacuum. The ACCA’s decision comes at a time when the “Big Four” have been repeatedly caught with their hands in the proverbial cookie jar.
EY was slapped with a record $100 million fine by US regulators in 2022 after it emerged that hundreds of staff had cheated on ethics exams.
KPMG faced a $25 million penalty in 2024 for widespread answer-sharing in the Netherlands.
Deloitte and PwC haven’t been immune either, facing multi-million dollar fines for similar “internal testing” scandals.
When the firms that are supposed to be the gatekeepers of global trust are failing their own internal ethics tests, the professional bodies simply cannot afford any shadow of a doubt over the core qualification. If the “letters after your name” lose their perceived value because the exam was “hackable,” the entire business model of the profession collapses.
However, let’s spare a thought for those for whom this isn’t about cheating, but about surviving. For many, the remote option was a godsend.
In a sector that is desperately trying to improve its diversity and inclusion stats, this move feels like a step backward to some. Take the student who shared her story with the FT: she sat her exams while pregnant, avoiding a six-hour round trip to the nearest centre. For disabled candidates or those with primary caregiving roles, the return to a “standardised” exam hall isn’t just an inconvenience it’s a barrier.
As a profession, we have to ask: in our rush to secure the “moat” around our qualification from AI, are we accidentally locking out the very people we need to diversify our ranks?
For partners and training managers at UK firms, this is a logistical headache that needs to be addressed now, not in 2026.
Budgeting for Travel: If your junior staff are based in the South West or the Highlands, “exam week” is about to get much more expensive. You’ll need to factor in hotels and travel costs that didn’t exist two years ago.
Study Leave Calibration: Remote exams meant students could log off and be back at their desks (or at least back to study) within minutes. The “ExCeL Centre Pilgrimage” eats up a whole day.
The Scepticism Shift: This move coincides with the ACCA’s first major syllabus overhaul in a decade. The new modules will focus heavily on AI, blockchain, and data science. Ironically, students will be learning about AI in a room where they aren’t allowed to use it. The goal is to simulate “real-time scenarios” that require professional scepticism, the one thing a chatbot still can’t fake (well, not yet).
The ACCA is making a tough, arguably unpopular call. But in the world of audit and advisory, our only real currency is our reputation. If that reputation is being eroded by “AI-assisted” qualifications, the currency becomes devalued for everyone including the honest students who worked through the night.
The era of the “Sofa Professional” might be ending, but if it saves the integrity of the profession, it’s a price the ACCA is clearly willing to pay.
